How the Utah system works
Nearly all Utah employers must carry coverage, overseen by the Utah Labor Commission — its Industrial Accidents Division handles claims, and its Adjudication Division hears disputes. Utah's culture is informal and phone-friendly: Division staff answer worker questions directly, and many disputes resolve before a hearing is ever needed.
Every deadline that matters
| What | Deadline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Report to your employer | 180 days | One of America's longest windows — but same-day written notice remains the standard that prevents every "did it really happen at work?" fight. |
| File an Application for Hearing | Up to 6 years from the injury for many benefits | Utah's formal dispute filing has an unusually long outer limit — but specific benefits carry shorter internal clocks, and evidence decays fast. Treat the long fuse as a safety net, never a plan. |
| Occupational disease | Discovery-based | Clocks run from when you knew the condition was work-related. |
Preferred providers — the first-move rule
Utah employers may designate a preferred provider network for initial treatment — and if they've properly notified workers, your first visit generally goes there. After the initial phase (and always in emergencies), your ability to choose or change grows, and referrals to specialists follow medical need. If no preferred provider was properly designated, the choice is yours from day one. When care stalls, the Industrial Accidents Division fields exactly these calls — use them before frustration becomes a gap in treatment.
The benefits
| Benefit | What it pays |
|---|---|
| Medical care | All necessary treatment for the work injury. |
| Temporary Total (TTD) | Two-thirds of your average weekly wage plus dependent allowances, within state caps — generally up to 312 weeks. |
| Permanent Partial (PPD) | Scheduled weeks by body part and impairment rating. |
| Permanent Total / death benefits | Extended benefits for those who can't work; survivor and burial benefits. |
How Utah disputes get resolved
- 1
Division help first
The Industrial Accidents Division resolves many payment and treatment problems informally.
- 2
Application for Hearing
The formal filing with the Adjudication Division — mediation is available and often works.
- 3
ALJ hearing and appeals
An evidentiary hearing, review by the Labor Commission, then the courts. Settlements need approval.
